Parents & Families
Parents of children with intellectual disabilities often report that supporting their child to experience success in the community is like a full-time job. Dealing with schools, doctors, ODSP, developmental services agencies, and other individuals and organizations can be an overwhelming proposition.
Getting the most out of the LiveWorkPlay experience also requires time and effort from parents, but LiveWorkPlay works very hard to help parents and work cooperatively with them so their children can enjoy a good lif
e.
Sometimes this means offering support and assistance for parents to navigate the system of services for people with intellectual disabiltiies. Sometimes it means working with parents to change family dynamics so people with intellectual disabilities can grow as self-advocates and contributing citizens. It is all about having a good life and doing what it takes to get there!
In November 2006 the first Self-Advocacy In Action confererence was held to explore some of these issues. This event was a huge success, credited with spurring many families to develop plans and take actions that brought about many interesting results. These outcomes ranged from taking on household responsibilities to staying home alone overnight to moving out of the family home!
