Access to LiveWorkPlay services is very limited. Please click here to read an explanation of why our capacity to help is not as welcoming as we would like it to be.

For those who remain interested despite the barriers, please download this information package and read it carefully before proceeding.

Please note that LiveWorkPlay adult services are not for everyone. They were created with funding support from the Ministry of Community and Social Services with the specific mandate of supporting individuals to make a significant transition to life in the community. But even if that were not our funded mandate, that is what we believe in at LiveWorkPlay.

Approximately 90% of persons with intellectual disabilities are labelled in the "mild to moderate" diagnostic category, and our services were created to help address the demand for transitional supports among that population. This was a specification of the original funding mandate through which our services were created. This means that LiveWorkPlay re-directs individuals with different needs to seek support from other agencies. Specifically, LiveWorkPlay does not have the physical or human resources to support persons with complex medical needs. We do support many individual with complex mental health needs.

Individuals and families may be able to obtain funding that they can use for fee-for-service arrangements through the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) Passport Initiative. To learn more about Passport and to download funding applications and other essential documents please visit the MCSS website. Families are also able to use their Special Services At Home (SSAH) funding towards LiveWorkPlay fees, or other independent source of financing of their choosing.

Please note that a relationship with LiveWorkPlay is not just about funding. It is also important to make sure that the individual and their supporters where applicable (e.g. parents) are comfortable with the rights and responsibilities of the relationship, and that the goals of the individual/family are a fit with LiveWorkPlay values.

One critical basic expectation for all adult services candidates is that they must use public transportation (OC Transpo). It is not necessary that they beging their relationship with LiveWorkPlay with full bus system competency, but they must be interested and willing to develop this ability.

LiveWorkPlay is not just an organization, it is also a movement for change. In order to be a part of this movement it is essential to share in certain key beliefs. This includes the following:

1)         Essential to promoting an improved quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities is support for self-advocacy control over their own decision-making (this is called "supported decision making" when the individual needs help with certain types of decisions).

2)         Exposure to risk is a part of life and not an excuse to hide from life, and supporting people with intellectual disabilities to be successful in their communities requires that their supporters help them to manage risk in the pursuit of a good life.

The self-advocacy movement brings with it certain expectations that will not necessarily be of interest to every potential member and/or their family. LiveWorkPlay often helps families to find other supports that are better suited to their needs/beliefs, or to connect with other organizations that may in part meet their needs with LiveWorkPlay forming another part of a total solution.

LiveWorkPlay encourages individuals and families to diversify their support network and reduce their reliance on agencies (including LiveWorkPlay) to the greatest extent possible.
