LiveWorkPlay is all about SUCCESS THROUGH COMMUNITY. LiveWorkPlay supports people through initiatives that can be described as "programs" but they actually function as small communities within the larger LiveWorkPlay community. Each of these smaller communities has its own characteristics but they all share the same core values. It's the LiveWorkPlay difference! Whether you are in your first year of Journeys or your fifth year of SMILE, you are a respected member of the LiveWorkPlay community with all the rights and obligations that entails.
In addition to these programs, LiveWorkPlay offers many "cross-pollination" opportunities so that the members of the different micro-communities can interact and gain a sense of the larger LiveWorkPlay community. This concept is extended to the community at large through our public events. Below are descriptions of some of our participant communities and our events!
- SMILE (Skills and More for Independent Living and Employment, Ages 21-28)
SMILE is all about BEING COMMUNITY
SMILE is an innovative circle of supports that is changing lives for adults with intellectual disabilities. It is a dynamic, flexible, self-directed, and goal-oriented system of applied learning.

Members of SMILE may also have access to opportunities outside of the normal routines of the SMILE community. This includes:
- OOOT (On Our Own Together Housing Initiative)
OOOT is all about LIVING COMMUNITY
- JOURNEYS (Weekly Community Participation Program, Ages 13-21)
Journeys is all about DISCOVERING COMMUNITY
Offered on Friday nights from September to June, Journeys provides an opportunity for school-aged participants to get out in the community and explore a variety of activities and environments. Using public transportation, managing money, learning appropriate conduct in different situations, and having fun with peers is what it's all about. Starting in 2003, Journeys was split along age lines to operate as "A" and "B" groups on most nights. This is to facilitate age appropriate peer interaction and also to allow for more individualized support.
- ACES (Active Community Experiences in Summer, Ages 13-20)
ACES is all about EXPLORING COMMUNITY
This popular summer program combines community-based learning and recreational fun. Currently offered in two week blocks in July, ACES has a very limited enrollment, with close to 100% retention of the previous year's participants. ACES occasionally accepts new participants from the 13-14 age group. Please see the HOW DO I JOIN section below for updates.
- New Year's Eve On Top Dinner & Dance Party
It's all about CELEBRATING COMMUNITY
It's the little party that grew and grew! It features the best view in town, a fabulous gourmet dinner, and dancing until 2:00 AM!
- LiveWorkPlay
Annual Auction
It's all about GENEROUS COMMUNITY
Just like the New Year's Eve party, this little event grew so big it is now a fixture in the Ottawa social scene! Come and see what all the fuss is about!
REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR ACES, JOURNEYS, SMILE

All LiveWorkPlay programs are currently at capacity. LiveWorkPlay does not maintain a waiting list. At any time when program vacancies are anticipated, LiveWorkPlay will announce an invitation to register for an information meeting. At this time the only anticipated possibility for vacancies are for Journeys and ACES, and only for the entry level (13-14) age group.
LiveWorkPlay understands that these limitations are frustrating and disappointing for those who are excited about the LiveWorkPlay community and want to join. Please understand that LiveWorkPlay does not have any options at this point in the organization's development. LiveWorkPlay is already at over-capacity, and our only responsible course of action is to serve those we are able to serve, and to do it well. There are other organizations in Ottawa who may be able to help you. Click here for a list of relevant contacts.
